Procedure mash grains for 1 hr at 152*. Sparge thouroughly, you'll need everything you can wring out of it. Add hops and sassafrass for entire boil. Add sugar at 30 mins into boil. Sassafrass root gives a light root beer note. Add enough water after boil to bring volume to 5.5 gallons. This recipe only works out to 10 cents if you buy bulk grain and hops, don't pay more than 50 cents a pound for sugar, steal the oats from a horse, and repitch yeast from your last batch. Don't laugh, it took me months to crack the 10 cent per 12 oz serving barrier. The percentage of sugar is over 20 percent, but I couldn't get close to 4 % abv without it. A great beer to serve to deadbeat relatives.
