I have a round 10 gallon igloo cooler that I mash in. I normally do 5 gallon mashes but is there a problem with doing a 2.5 gallon mash in the same 10 gallon mash tun?
Would the extra dead space make a difference?

No problem at all.

Except that PREHEATING the walls will mean that the LARGE OPEN space above the grain will not be cold and drop the mash temp.

FWIW, I don't preheat mine and have no problems. I simply figured out how much hotter to make the water of I don't preheat. Saves time and effort.

What Denny (responsible for my FAVORITE non Belgian Ale yeast) is saying is what I am saying...OP Russell CAN mash in large tun BUT not using the usual hot water temps but adjusting for the large amount of cool (remember cool air falls) air above the mash line which will steal calories from the mash mass core unless preheating or extra hot water is used
