Are they interchangeable? I am not talking about MO, Halycon, or Pearl... Just plain old Pale Ale Malt..

I am having a hard time choosing between the two, so my question is if I buy one or the other, would I be able to sub recipes with one or the other?

Let me know. Thanks!

I'd say yes. Everyone has a favorite or one is better than an other for a particular style but you can sub one pale malt with another.

+1 AZbrewman.
Some fellow at the LHBS got me to try some MO, and I didn't notice a difference, except that feeling I get when I've paid too much for something.
There might be minor differences in the extract potential and enzyme activity, but any reputable maltster is going to do the same thing to it once they get their hands on it.
Ever notice any difference in where the wheat was grown when you buy a loaf of bread?

Thanks gents! I guess I should just buy a few bags of each and test them out. If they work out, they are only $25/bag, and that is AWESOME! If they don't, they are only $25/bag, and that is AWESOME!

Mike - Where are you finding $25 bags of malt?

I always wanted to do a side by side of beers made with base malts and see if I can tell the difference. I bet it's tough. Anyone try this?

NCM (North Country Malt). They have bags of CMC Pale Ale Malt for $25 before shipping.  Shipping a pallet to MD is $110, but they can do up to 2,200 pounds on a pallet.  So if you get some people together, it works out pretty well.  They have Baird's UK Pale Ale malt for $31, and MO for $35./bag  Fawcett's MO is $39/bag.

Where do you live?

Yeah, I just received three bags of the TF MO @39 from NCM. I asked about cheaper malt, and the next one down was $34 or so, so I decided to go with the TF. I didn't know about the $25 option. Interesting...

You can't go wrong at any point with Thomas Fawcett Malts.

I always keep a bag of MO and Halcyon.
They always taste better than Munton's ever could.

I've been using Muntons MO and like it, nice and nutty. I'm going to have to try Thomas Fawcetts MO. Whats the big difference Pooper?? I've used crisp MO before but it would gum-up and that was the only time I had a stuck sparge.

Munton's isn't the same.

What you have to remember in England.
What part of England that Malt was made in.
Regions are everything with English Beers.
It's not just the yeast that makes the difference.

Munton's is a Southern England Malt.
Thomas Fawcett is a Yorkshire Malt, It makes all of the difference in the world.
Especially if your trying to make Yorkshire Beers, You can't do it without Yorkshire Malts.
I wouldn't even attempt my Yorkshire Bitter's without Thomas Fawcett.
Just not the same.

@Mike C - I live in Springfield PA.

Do you have dirty pictures of someone at NCM? It only gives me a price of $35.89 when I add a 55lb bag of whole to my cart. What kind of shenanigans you pulling over there?

Because we are ordering by the pallet. Prices are better at that point.
